BAFA announces expansion of Board to support continued growth of sport

The British American Football Association (BAFA), the National Governing Body for American football in Great Britain, announces an expansion to its Board of Directors and a commitment to work towards a single organisation structure by 2013.

One of the founder members of BAFA, Charles Fraser MacNamara, returns in the newly created position of Vice-Chairman. A director of Fraser MacNamara solicitors, a partner in a Consultancy and Event Management Company and a former Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture for a Metropolitan Borough Council, MacNamara brings a wealth of experience to the role.

In another change to the structure, Andy Fuller, the current Chief Executive of the University league (BUAFL), has accepted an invitation to the post of BAFA Director of Student Football Development where he will work to maximise the opportunities arising for the sport in the Further and Higher Education sectors. Andy, a graduate of Loughborough University, brings a high quality sports development background to the BAFA Board. Andy is also a former sports policy consultant to the NFL and has worked as a consultant to the BBC on its online Sports Academy and to Intosport.com, the innovative new online sports coaching portal.
 
In a further move, each of the current member associations will nominate a further representative to the Board, although each association will remain with only one vote. The BUAFL too, will have a further representative: the newly created post of BUAFL Commissioner. The Commissioner will lead on the day-to-day running of the BUAFL following Fuller's new appointment.

Further to these changes, current BAFA Chairman, Gary Marshall, has been reappointed for a further three-year term and his role now carries full voting rights.

Gary commented, "I am pleased to welcome Charles and Andy to the Board and delighted that BAFA is making significant steps to deliver strong leadership for our growing membership. The workload of the directors has been rising for some time. Bringing in new blood to the Board will enable BAFA to move forward on more fronts simultaneously and also spread the load of existing projects". Gary concluded, “An announcement of the new directors is anticipated in the not too distant future”.

BAFA will also be consulting participants in the sport about its long-term governance and the future structure of the Board. The aim is for BAFA to become a single association by 2013 – the ultimate goal of the 2007/8 Sport England funded ‘Amalgamation of Participation Streams’ project and a guideline of the Deloitte and Touché ‘High Level Review of the Modernisation Programme for Governing Bodies of Sport’ of July 2003. In seeking to achieve this goal, the BAFA will also consult with the Central Council of Physical Recreation (CCPR).

Speaking on the announcement, Richard Norman of the CCPR commented, “BAFA has covered a lot of ground in recent years and they continue to surprise me with the speed of their developments”. Richard added, “The steps they have taken recently have been done with great consideration and will, undoubtedly, contribute to the continued delivery of a sustainable sport”.
