BAFA wants people to "Get into American Football"

With the media spotlight on American Football next week as the New Orleans Saints and San Diego Chargers play their regular season game at Wembley Stadium, the British American Football Association (BAFA) the National Governing Body for American Football in Britain is calling for people to "Get into American Football by undertaking a national campaign".

BAFA Chairman, Gary Marshall commented, "We have clubs and teams from Inverness to Newquay undertaking promotional activity over the weekend and I would like to thank them all for their support in our national campaign".

The campaign will be taking place in bars, sports clubs, universities and supermarkets as well as the game at Wembley and delivered by clubs involved in delivering grassroots American Football.

BAFA Whole Sport Plan Manager, Ken Walters added, "The objective of the campaign is to recruit players, referees, coaches, volunteers and fans to participate in grassroots American Football. We know the interest is there, we simply want to show people how they can get involved through getintoamericanfootball.com".

American Football is currently enjoying a surge in interest and the presence of the NFL in the British market is a significant contributing factor. For example in 2008 there has been the following growth:
12% increase in participants in the British American Football Association*
16% increase in teams participating in the British University American Football League*
26% increase in new clubs and teams in the British American Football League*
 League
Approximately 400% increase in qualified coaches in the British American Football League*

And one of many CCPR administered/Sport England funded initiatives is hoped to deliver a 500% increase in persons officiating in our sport in 2009.

* All statistics are provided by the BAFA centralised registration database, PlaySmart. A CCPR administered/Sport England funded initiative.

In support of the campaign, Minister for Sport, Mr. Gerry Sutcliffe MP stated, "I welcome the campaign from BAFA to encourage more people to get involved in American Football. The spotlight will be shining on the sport in the UK with the NFL game at Wembley and there is clearly a growing appetite for the game in this country. Whether it be as a player, referee, coach, volunteer or fan there are opportunities out there for people to get into American football. I wish the campaign every success."
