Mike Leach Visits GB Lions Camp

The GB camp on the weekend of 18th & 19th of June had a special assistant in Mike Leach - Head coach of Texas Tech University. Texas Tech is a NCAA div 1 college who reached the Holiday bowl in 2004 beating California 45-31

The Lions were getting ready for the 2005 European Championships group B championship, being played in Malmo, Sweden in July.

Coach Leach helped offensive co-ordinator Jim Messenger with installing the offence, and offered words of support to all the players and coaching staff.

Coach Ayub, the National Programme Director welcomed Coach Leach, and his input, he spoke to the players about how the Programme can only improve with the interest of such experienced coaches. Coach Leach was impressed with the programme and enthused about the fact that there was also young kids (London O's flag) and young men (O's and Blitz youth) training in the same venue.

Later all the GB Lions staff spent time with Coach Leach talking about the goals of the programme and how it can improve, and Coach Leach offered some exciting insights. Having spent time coaching in Finland, Mike Leach understood the problems faced by the National programme.

The GB Lions have one more camp before they fly to Malmo. The first game is versus Germany on 28/07/05 and the winner of this game plays in the final on 30/07/05. The Lions qualified for the Group A competition by beating favourites France 18 - 17 in the final with a Pete Rogers field goal.
